Slaughter Of The Soul is a 1995 album by Swedish melodic death metal band At the Gates, being their fourth full-length album release. It is considered a genre classic by many fans, and was largely responsible for establishing the Gothenburg scene, providing somewhat of an archetype for new melodic death metal bands. Slaughter of the Soul was re-released on CD in 2002 and 2007. When it was first released, At the Gates' Earache debut Slaughter of the Soul was regarded as a generally excellent example of Gothenburg-style melodic death metal, and certainly the band's best and most focused album to date. But the commonly held view was that it wasn't anything all that special, either. At the Gates picked up a style here that is definitely notable. The fast moving riffs roll on at 90mph and sacrifice nothing in the way of melody or blending harmonies. The title track Slaughter of the Soul and Suicide Nation both contain dual guitar leading that seems to complete a though you know there is a perfect riff to play in that part, and they know exactly which one. World of Lies is a slower, chugging track that pounds away with cannon-like drumming and a great rhythm. As well as their flare for heavier writing is shown on Slaughter of the Soul, all is not lost.
