Impossible Grey is a Spartan work, even in the context of a composer who specializes in presenting quiet, small sounds. The first half of the piece alternates between white noise, similar to a light rain, and low rumbles moving about in space. Near the half-way point, there is a sudden ringing, and although the rain reappears briefly, the ringing slowly lowers itself in pitch and volume, becoming brief murmurs in the bass range near the conclusion.
