The band was originally known as Custard Gun and featured David McCormack on vocals and guitar, Paul Medew on bass McCormack and Medew both ex-Who's Gerald, James Straker later in The Melniks on guitar and Shane Brunn who later formed Hugbubble and Vanlustbader on drums. Custard's debut major label album Wahooti Fandango was issued in 1994. The video for the album's first single, 'Aloha Tambourinist', was the only Custard video to ever get played on Video Hits. The video, set on a beach, featured male models pretending to be Custard, while scantily clad women roll around in the sand. Spaces by the Side of the Road DVD 2007. By the end of the 1970s, Smokie seemed more or less spent as a serious commercial force, although they continued racking up the hit singles, sporadically at home and consistently in Germany. This album, however, caught them during one of their fallow patches, midway between the peaks of Mexican Girl and Take Good Care of My Baby, and it was very easy to overlook it entirely. Easy, but wrong. The band released five studio albums: ButtercupBedford, Wahooti Fandango, Wisenheimer, We Have the Technology and Loverama, a number of EPs and singles and a greatest hits compilation entitled Goodbye Cruel World. A DVD video clip compilation called The Spaces by the Side of the Road - A Digital History of Custard was released in 2007. Dave has also managed to compose two film scores. My respect to the Israelis like Tikva and Amnon, the Zochrot folks and of course to Lia herself who have the independence of spirit to learn and process history for themselves and the guts to speak out in what is a very polarised society. My mother, a Greek Palestinian, and her family fled their home in Jerusalem in 1948 and became refugees in Cyprus where I was born of a Cypriot father. Even though this is a concept album, a number of the cuts can stand on their own. Time is a fine country-tinged rocker with a powerful guitar solo by David Gilmour and Money is broadly and satirically played with appropriately raunchy sax playing by Dick Parry, who also contributes a wonderfully-stated, breathy solo to Us And Them. The non-vocal On The Run is a standout with footsteps racing from side to side successfully eluding any number of odd malevolent rumbles and explosions only to be killed off by the clocks ticking that leads into Time
