Try watching this video in a spinning chair. Rainforest Version I, Music for Dance is a wonderful live electronic work that has become a new music classic since its creation in 1968 for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Performed throughout the world, the 21-minute dance was also notable for its stage set that included helium-filled reflective silver mylar pillows designed by Andy Warhol. Version I was performed by Takehisa Kosugi and David Tudor in eight channels for a sound system that surrounded the audience. The Art of David Tudor 1963-1992, Vol. 6 - David Tudor. David Tudor was an American pianist and composer of experimental music. He studied piano with Stefan Wolpe and became known as one of the leading performers of avant garde piano music. He gave the first American performance of the Piano Sonata No. 2 by Pierre Boulez in 1950, and a European tour in 1954 greatly enhanced his reputation. Karlheinz Stockhausen dedicated his Klavierstück VI 1955 to Tudor. Tudor also gave early performances of works by Morton Feldman and La Monte Young. David Tudors Rainforest V Variation 1 19732015 is an ecosystem of objects that envelops you in sound. Chirping, croaking, clicking, or ringing, each sculpture speaks in its own voice, resonating back into the amplification system of the gallery space, joining the harmonious cacophony of the collective noise. According to Tudor, the concept for the piece grew out of a dream-vision of an orchestra of loudspeakers, each speaker being as unique as any musical instrument. This heterogeneous group of objects, constructed from a variety of materials, echoes the diversity of flora and fauna in. RAINFOREST - David Tudor. Sounds electronically derived from the resonant characteristics of physical materials. First version 1968, a sound-score for Merce Cunningham's dance work of the same name, established a means of sound transformations without the use of electronic modulation: the source sounds, when transmitted through the physical materials, will be modified by the resonant nodes of those materials. In 1973 I made Rainforest IV where the objects that the sounds are sent through are very large so that they have their own presence in space. Rainforest IV 1973 is an electroacoustic environment conceived by David Tudor and realized at The Art of David Tudor symposium by the group Composers Inside Electronics. It grew out of a 1973 workshop in Chocorua, New Hampshire, that included David Tudor, John Driscoll, Phil Edelstein, Linda Fisher, Ralph Jones, Martin Kalve, David Tudor, and Bill Viola.
