Info

Porgy and Bess is a studio album by jazz vocalist and trumpeter Louis Armstrong and singer Ella Fitzgerald, released on Verve Records in 1958. The third and final of the pair's albums for the label, it is a suite of selections from the George Gershwin opera Porgy and Bess. Orchestral arrangements are by Russell Garcia, who had previously arranged the 1956 jazz vocal recording The Complete Porgy and Bess. Porgy And Bess - Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong. This is the classic Verve Porgy & Bess, and it's been reissued many, many times. The second, recorded during the spring and summer of 1976 and issued by RCA, brought Ray Charles together with versatile British vocalist Cleo Laine, backed by an orchestra under the direction of Frank DeVol. A comparison of these two realizations bears fascinating fruit, particularly when the medleys of street vendors are played back to. I just bought a copy of the MGV 4011-2 edition from Verve catalog, but I'm wondering about the actual manufacturing year of this piece, since the booklet mentions a book from Ira Gerschwin from 1959... how could the record has been made in 1957? I didn't find any mention of further re-edition with the same catalog number...
mono MGV 4011-2 and stereo MGVS 6040-2 are on an Verve advert in Billboard of May 4, 1959 (page 33).
"The Complete Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong On Verve"' compact disc set's liner notes cite MGVS 6040-2 as the original LP issue for Porgy & Bess with no reference to 4011-2, so I'm thinking your guess that 4011-2 has a different release year than indicated here may be correct. And that the "Reissue" tag associated with the entry for 6040-2 here is also incorrect.
I have the same copy. It was given to me by my uncle and he says he bought it in 1959.
