The Visitor is an instrumental album by American musician Jim O'Rourke. It was released on Drag City in 2009 on CD and LP, but not digitally by O'Rourke's request. O'Rourke played every instrument on the album, and it was all recorded in his home in Tokyo. It marks his first proper studio album in eight years since Insignificance, released in 2001, and is intended to be a continuation of that album, Eureka, and Bad Timing. The Visitor by Jim O'Rourke, released 08 September 2009 1. The Visitor Breathing in, breathing out. Tide comes in, tide goes out. The sun rises and it also sets: beginnings and endings. These are the first impressions given by The Visitor: a build-up and break-down. One seamless, 38-minute piece of music that completely engages its listeners. An extremely thoughtful piece that even a year later, still retains all of the qualities it had upon first listen. This record made me realize the full potential music can have when someone who actually gives a damn does something about it. Given the sheer experimentalism of his past recordings, whether in pop or experimental music, Jim ORourke is an enigmatic guitarist, producer, engineer, and composer, but hes not one who can be placed into a box. Throughout his own career as a solo artist - even across his previous four albums on Drag City that go back a decade - hes never repeated himself, nor has he sold his ambition short. The Visitor. Offering a play-by-play guide to The Visitor, an album that O'Rourke says required over 200 separate recorded parts, would be tedious at best, but a few qualities deserve notice: The Visitor feels polite and dainty, perhaps to a fault. Much of its music, all made by O'Rourke alone in Tokyo, isn't unique or overly complicated, in that one could easily find a guitarist, organist, drummer, banjo picker, and guitarist to play the bulk of this album as a band. Given its patient development and refusal to climax, The Visitor runs the risk of being labeled boring and bland. Genre: Experimental. Critic Score. User Score. After a minute of deliberate, restrained acoustic guitar phrases accompanied with a few touches of piano, Jim ORourkes The Visitor unfolds suddenly into a warm, rich, full-band arrangement, humming with sinewy slide guitars and clippety-clop percussion. Unlike ORourkes 1999 pop masterpiece Eureka, it is not an album of songs to know and love neither is it remotely close to 2001s more aggressive Insignificance. It is, as Ive stated a few times now, a single suite of instrumental music, perhaps too pleasant for some or too weird for others.
