The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get is the second studio album by the American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joe Walsh. The album was released in 1973, on the label ABC-Dunhill in the United States, and United Kingdom, and it was also released on MCA Records in Germany. It proved to be his commercial breakthrough, largely on the strength of the Top 40 hit single, Rocky Mountain Way, which helped propel the album into the Top 10. Joe Walsh - Book Ends. We had the Smoker album pretty much done, he told Rolling Stone , except we had this one track that was an instrumental. I couldn't think of any words and everybody was patiently waiting for me to come up with something. One day I was in my backyard in Boulder mowing the lawn. And then I looked up. and there were the Rocky Mountains. It was summer, but you could still see snow on the back range. It just hit me how beautiful it all was, 5,000 feet up. And that was it - the words came: Spent the last year Rocky Mountain way, couldn't get much higher. The statement is meant to be comedic relief, there to set up the story of how the wild, unpredictable Joe Walsh - the one famous for hotel room trashing antics - ushered in a new chapter of the Eagles late-70s hedonism.
