Swedens twitchy, retro-punk Love Is All churn up the type of prototypical punk that utterly thrills - not to mention drives a person to dangerous modes of free-form, spastic dance. A giddy Josephine Olausson sings and twitters and coos, sometimes in a reverb-wrapped chamber of chill, and other times in a straightforward, clipped, delivery - but she always means business. Opening track New Beginnings starts off with a rubbery, pulsing guitar that melds into contortioning saxophones, reminiscent of seminal art-punk band X-Ray Spex. In other words, A Hundred Things Keep Me Up at Night is a logical sequel to her band's 2005 debut Nine Times That Same Song, wherein she follows the cycle of making out and falling out by talking us through the subsequent sadness of single life. Few bands are better at conveying that sense of feeling alone in the crowd, with Olausson's inner monologues fighting to be heard over the din of her band's sax-blasted garage-disco. Sonically speaking, A Hundred. Love Is All's second album, A Hundred Things Keep Me Up at Night, beats the dreaded sophomore slump by doing two important things. First, they hew closely to the tinny and overloaded production of Nine Times That Same Song that worked so brilliantly, but introduce enough changes to keep the album from being a carbon copy. The production by the band and Wyatt Cusick of Aislers Set keeps the hissy clatter and the cavernous reverb, with Josephine Olausson's vocals distorted and fuzzy. The drums and bass are relatively free of noise though, which gives the record a punch and power the. From the album A Hundred Things Keep Me Up at Night. Love Is All. In the end, the album's real failing is not its individual flaws but a dry, rote feeling that descends halfway through the album, where you realize you're listening to little more than a reheated punk snarl that has been cleaned up and shipped back to the U. from overseas more than 30 years after the fact. Tight but stormy, A Hundred Things Keep Me Up at Night, the second album from Gothenburg-based Love Is All, wastes little time getting started, but ultimately doesnt go much of anywhere, wearing deeper grooves into patterns already established on the bands first album. Love is All works with two defined tempos: a racing, horn-laden scramble with overdriven organ and Gang of Four-style guitar and a splashy form of shoegaze-lite that slows things down just so we can appreciate how much the band sparkles. Sometimes the two styles are combined. Make Out Fall Out Make Up - A Chicken Lips Malfunction
