Info

Stuff is the debut studio disc by the group Stuff, a team of renowned session musicians. Released in 1976 on Warner Bros. it was produced by Herb Lovelle and jazz producer Tommy LiPuma. The record earned RIAA gold status, and the group would go on to record two more studio discs, each of which also went gold. Andrew Claes, Dries Laheye, Lander Gyselinck, Mixmonster Menno, Joris Caluwaerts Mastering by Daddy Kev at Cosmic Zoo. Recorded by Frederik Dejongh and Joris Caluwaerts at Lachapelle and Finster. Mixed by Tim Lenssens, Mathijs Indesteeghe and STUFF. at On the Moon. is a 5-headed instrumental cyclops that takes you through a journey of mashed up grooves and eclectic sounds. Stuff never won the respect of bop snobs, but that isn't what they were going for. The band's specialty was an accessible, groove-oriented blend of jazz, R&B, and pop, and not everyone who bought their records was a jazz expert. Though some of Stuff's fans knew a lot about jazz, others were Average White Band or Chaka Khan fans who bought the occasional Grover Washington, Jr. Stuff's LPs weren't amazing, but they were generally likable. That is the case with this self-titled debut album, which was produced by Herb Lovelle and Tommy LiPuma and earned the band a loyal following in 1976. While congenial tunes like Reflections of Divine Love and Foots aren't breathtaking, they're pleasant and easy to like. Guitarist Eric Gale, drummer Steve Gadd, and other Stuff members were capable of a lot more. Nonetheless, the band's recording career was off to a decent, if unremarkable, start with this 1976 LP. You know, usually when a critic dogs an album, I usually gravitate to it. I am one of those people who like what others would not touch. With that being said though, I have to say the critics had this one right one the money. I never heard of "Stuff", so I took a chance and bought it. It's not bad, but like it's been said, there nothing here that grabs ahold of you to make you go ooohhh! I guess, once again that's what I expect from '70's music, especially R&B and Jazz. I listen for that fusion sound, but it's not here. Now, that's not to say that it dosen't have it's moments. Songs like "Foots", "My Sweetness", and "Dixie / Up On The Roof", flirt with greatness, but never really reaches it. I guess what I am trying to say is that it sounds more like session playing than an actual group creating. I just guess that my standards are really high. I do say this, Eric Gale and company can play, and that's what carries this album.
