Sviatoslav Richter. Frédéric Chopin. Sviatoslav Richter Recital - Live at Carnegie Hall, October 28, 1960. Richter was known as a pianist of transcendent abilities, particularly adept at highlighting the nuances of different styles. Though his interests focused primarily on music of Beethoven, and Prokofiev, he was also highly regarded for his Schubert, Schumann, Bach, Debussy, and Ravel and in the early 1960s he made a memorable recording of Benjamin Britten's Piano Concerto with the composer conducting. He preferred intimate concert settings over big auditoriums, and thus returned many times to the Aldeburgh and Spoleto Festivals. Sviatoslav Richter was reported upset over a poster that advertised him as the greatest pianist in the world, claiming that I cannot live up to such a legend, I'm just a normal human being who plays the piano. Along with the Sonata, pianophiles will want the ChopinLiszt volume for the pianist's sensational traversal of selected Chopin Études and Liszt Transcendental Études. Prokofiev's sonata was recorded in the Melodiya studios on June 29, 1958. The other pieces are live recordings of the concert of July 14, 1967 in Spoleto.
The piece indicated as De Falla is actually a prelude to Debussy and precisely "La serenade interrompue" from Book I of the Preludes, performed as an encore in the concert of Spoleto.
I cannot believe this is a live performance (thinking about the Prokofiev in particular). I used to think it was a substandard disc, sound-wise, but now that my record player has a very good cartridge AND NEEDLE, the sound is decent. Not great, but decent for a 60s live recording. On anything less than a really stellar tracker, the pressing will be fairly noisy, and slightly distorted at the loudest passages in the inner grooves; be warned. But the supreme quality of the musical information makes the sonic shortcomings a non-issue.
A testament to this musical titan.
