This 1969 UK edition contains the 'Valentin' mix of the album, by MGM engineer Val Valentin, as does the Canada edition, in contrast to all other worldwide releases prior to the mid-80's which instead contain Lou Reed's alternate 'Closet' mix.
As well as a "clean, bright, evenly balanced" sound, the Valentin mix also features an entirely different take of Some Kinda Love.

The image of Lou Reed on the reverse sleeve is split horizontally on this issue. On all other issues the image is split vertically.

Info

The Velvet Underground is the self-titled third studio album by American rock band the Velvet Underground. Released in March 1969, it was their first record with Doug Yule, who was a replacement for John Cale. Recorded in 1968 at TTG Studios in Hollywood, California, the album's sound-consisting largely of ballads and straightforward rock songs-marked a notable shift in style from the band's previous recordings. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the album number 314 in their list of the 500. The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground. Upon first release, the Velvet Underground's self-titled third album must have surprised their fans nearly as much as their first two albums shocked the few mainstream music fans who heard them. After testing the limits of how musically and thematically challenging rock could be on Velvet Underground & Nico and White LightWhite Heat, this 1969 release sounded spare, quiet, and contemplative, as if the previous albums documented some manic, speed-fueled party and this was the subdued morning after. The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground. The Velvet Underground is the third album released by the eponymous band. Its the first album the band released without founding member John Cale, who was kicked out of the band by Lou Reed due to his wild artistic ideas clashing with Reeds desire to bring the band to a wider audience with more accessible music. For example, Cale wanted to record this album with amplifiers submerged underwater. The Velvet Underground are alive and well which in itself may surprise some people and ever-changing. How do you define a group like this, who moved from Heroin to Jesus in two short-years It is not enough to say that they have one of the broadest ranges of any group extant this should be apparent to anyone who has listened closely to their three albums. The album is unfortunately not without its weak tracks though. The Murder Mystery is an eight minute exercise in aural overload that annoys after a few listenings, and Pale Blue Eyes is a folky ballad that never really gets off the ground either musically or lyrically. This pressing sounds muddy. Too compressed. Later pressing like Japan first sounds much better.

The story goes that MGM USA supplied the wrong masters to the UK in 1969 and the very first pressing of The Velvet Underground's third album has a mix by Val Valentin which differs substantially to the later 'Closet Mix' (apparently done by Lou Reed). The difference is most notable on Some Kinda Love which is actually a completely different take of the song. Reed's singing is very different (not so 'sexed up'), the lyrics are slightly different and the sound is brighter and more defined, especially on the guitars. The cowbell is also lower down on the Valentin mix. No one knows for sure how many copies of the first issue were pressed but estimates are 250-300 of the 1G matrix pressing and about the same for the 1-R.
After this limited first UK issue all subsequent pressings were the 'closet mix'. The closet mix was also used in all other territories.
The 1999 Simply Vinyl SVLP 110, November 1999 pressing is also supposed to be the Valentin mix but I haven't heard it to confirm.
As stated in the notes - the album's artwork is also different to the later issues. The image of Lou is split horizontally on the back sleeve of this UK issue only. The name of the band is also set higher on the front cover.
